COP29 what does it mean for you?
With Kier Starmer attending the COP29 and announcing further cardon reductions for the UK, do you know how this might affect you and your property? In COP26 Boris Johnson committed to reducing emissions (based on 1990 levels) by 68% by 2030, Sir Kier Starmer at COP 29 committed to make further reductions to 81% by 2035. But what does this mean to you?
The acceptable MEES (minimum energy efficiency standards) for properties will be changing. Although the changes set for 2025 have been delayed until 2027, this new target for carbon emission reduction will mean that changes will have to happen to all properties.
MEES are measures using EPCs. All properties whether Commercial or Domestic need an EPC to be sold or rented*. Currently properties need to be level E or above but it is inevitable, with Starmer’s commitments, that this will have to change to a C rating.
What is an EPC and what does it tell you?
EPCs essentially an assessment of the building’s structure as well as its heating, cooling, ventilation, lighting and insulation; which results in an estimate of the cost of running that building.
An EPC will also recommend improvements and investments that will help reduce the cost of running your building.
If you are planning works, like an extension at home or refurbishing your office, an EPC can help understand which elements of your current building are poorly rated.
An EPC will recommend improvements in insulation and renewables as well as more efficient lighting and heating systems.
